April 9, 2026 | Eric Goldfisher

When it comes to the marriage of horology and sport, few names trot the course like Dan Patch. Born on April 29, 1896, Patch was born with legs so crooked he could barely stand on his own. It might sound like a story lifted from Hollywood, but Patch defied the odds to outgrow his disability, becoming an undefeated champion harness racer and taking America by storm. This celebrity status is why his visage adorned many pocket watches in the early 1900s and is still being talked about 130 years later.

The Dan Patch championship spirt can be found in our latest online auction, Pace & Precision. Celebrate his victories by placing a bid on a beautiful selection of watches, coins, and jewelry. Bidding is open from April 9 through April 16, 2026; as always, the first lots start to close at 1PM ET. We recommend Dan Patch aficionados keep an eye on the closing time of the Dan Patch chronograph.

Top Picks from Tyler St. Gelais, Head of Wristwatches & Jewelry

If Dan Patch was a human, what watch would he wear? That's a question I asked myself before making my pics from Pace & Precision.

Lot 70 | Tudor Prince Oysterdate, ref 7206/1

Although Tudor has often been thought of as the little brother to Rolex, today they're a bona fide powerhouse. Similar to the Dan Patch story, Tudor came back with their own underdog tale after leaving the US watch market and coming back in 2013, totally reinvented. This Prince Oysterdate, circa 1968, was produced during the height of Tudor's early greatness and delivers an impressive "Rolex look" at a fraction of the price.

Lot 75 | Longines All Guard, ref 9006

Longines is the official partner, timekeeper, and watch for the American Triple Crown, making this All Guard an easy choice. A clean dial, gorgeous, chamfered lugs, and excellent case size make this an easy choice for winners on and off the racetrack. This includes a period correct presentation box that will have you going for the gold as you click bid.

Lot 74 | Seiko "Pogue" Chronograph, ref 6139

Were you around for the launch of the first automatic chronograph? The debate on which manufacturer produced the first mass produced model continues to this day, with fans of Seiko, Zenith, and Breitling/Hamilton/Heuer determined to have their favorite brand be the trailblazer. No matter who actually crossed the finish line first, this Seiko "Pogue" would feel right at home on any champion's wrist. The watch is in exceptional condition with a beautiful dial that has matching lume with a beautiful patina on the dial and hands that has not been victim to moisture damage like so many other examples.

Top Picks from Fred Hansen, Head of Pocket Watches

There is no better way to celebrate the birthday of the horse that inspired many models of pocket watch than with a New York Standard "Dan Patch" chronograph. Also here are a few of my other favorites that are also winners, just like Dan Patch.

Lot 111 | New York Standard, Dan Patch private label chronograph, 17J

This is a superb example of a Dan Patch chronograph celebrating his 1905 world record for the fastest mile by a harness horse of 1 minute and 55.25 seconds. The engraving on the back is very well done, but I'll let the pictures speak for themself. We encourage you to pay attention to the time when this lot closes out (in EDT).

Lot 101 | Howard Keystone, Series 11, 21J, w/original box

This Howard is clean, classic, and comes complete with its original Howard box and matching paperwork bearing correctly matched movement and case serial numbers, a seldom seen accompaniment to this watch. Pieces like this are incredibly popular with collectors, so we recommend a good internet connection as this lot starts to close.

Lot 96 | Elgin, Veritas, Grade 214, 23J, early first run

This is an incredibly cool, early example from the first Veritas production run. The serial number puts this model as the 25th to roll off the production line, making it a real treat for Elgin fans.

Although its case is not original to the movement, the equestrian scene is a reminder of how popular horse racing was back when these watches were produced.

Lot 47 | Agassiz 24 Hour Military Watch with Winding Indicator

This Agassiz has it all: 24-hour dial, winding indicator, elegant movement design, and beautiful movement condition (despite needing an overhaul).  This model comes as pictured with a carrying case made by Industrial Electronic Corp. Made for use in unpredictable and rugged situations, it features a shock-resistant mount and metal-shielded bayonet-style lock for combat use, typically in aircraft.

Saddle up and get ready to place your bids when they start to close on April 16th! As a reminder, we recommend early registration so there are no delays when you try to enter your bid. The Jones & Horan Auction Team is always happy to set up an appointment for anyone looking to preview lots in person at our NH headquarters. Simply send us an email at auctions@jones-horan.com and we'll handle the rest. Happy bidding!
