Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, some uneven toning to plate surfaces, nickel portion with some darkening of tone in most areas though with a brighter tone to much of barrel bridge, majority of outer perimeter of barrel bridge with a more reflective sheen and some ultra-fine scratch striations likely from a past wiping, gilt tone somewhat stronger to main plate than barrel bridge, some small surface spots, few mild micro-fine scratches, balance jewel setting with a mismatched screw, regulator spring with micro-fine scratch striations likely from sanding for oxide removal; dial with hl to right side of seconds-register, minuscule pinpoint flake to left rim of seconds-register hole; fine-plus hands, minute with oxide to tip and punch mark at center hub; case shows little wear, no dents or dings, good engine turning detail with mild reduction at rear shoulder, stray case screw witness marks on swing-ring immediately adjacent the present mvt's lower case screw cause some ambiguity to assessing the originality of this case (these marks could have been caused by slight past misalignments of the present mvt and this cataloguer believes this is more likely the correct interpretation); tight bow, crown shows medium wear; glass crystal with very short scratch at upper edge.

APW - Illinois, Bunn Special, 26J, 18S, 14K gold OF swingout case, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, two-tone wavy ribbon pattern gilt and nickel damascene, s#1742968. Gross weight of assembled watch 73.0 dwt (113.7 g). A rare top grade watch, the 26 jewel 18 size Illinois had the highest jewel count of any regular production watch made by a major American maker. Based on examples observed we believe the total production of 26 jewel Illinois was 270 made (with production in serial number ranges 1742801 to 1743000, 2109401 to 2019450, and 2367731 to 2367750). Of these 270 made; we believe that only approximately 90 to 110 were marked "Bunn Special" (with the remainder being distributed as approximately 135 to 150 that were private label marked "Pennsylvania Special" and approximately 25 to 30 that were private label marked "Benjamin Franklin").
