961. APW - Waltham 23J Premier Maximus with winding

HB&B RR style case, SW-SS, NOS WED (frequently referred to as

258th produced. The watch comes from the original family, who acquired
a new old stock Premier Maximus dial (due to condition of the original
dial) for presentation at auction. A family member writes, "The Waltham
Premier Maximus 17057058 belonged to Everett Kounce, grandson of
Francis Koontz, (born in Lorraine, France, who came to the US at age 21
and later fought in the Civil War). Everett was a motorcycle trick
rider who rode under the name Jack Early. He never had children, but
was a favorite among his nephews and nieces because he would let them
ride in the sidecar of his motorcycle when he came to visit. He gave
this watch to my mother, his niece, sometime in the 1940's and she has
kept it in a box ever since then. As Jack Early, he traveled the
Midwest and California. His motorcycle tricks included riding in a huge
drum laid on its side, forward and back, up one side and then back up
the other side, until he had enough speed and momentum to go all the
way back around. He would make several loops, and then slow down to go
forward and back until he could stop. As a child I was amazed to see a
motorcycle go upside down without falling. I suspect that the slowing
down was the more dangerous part of the trick. Another of his tricks
was to ride through a wall of fire. The last time he did this trick, a
piece of board got stuck in his wheel and he was badly burned and
hospitalized for several months. Sometime after that, Uncle Everett
lived and worked on a ranch in northern California. At one time, he and
the rancher traveled the country and took photographs which they put in
a calendar and sold. For years he rode a horse in the Rose Bowl Parade.
He died in California in 1957.
