for 1822, KWKS, solid gold ET and stipple-engraved dial with appliques in four
colors of gold, crank-roller side lever escapement with small escape wheel
diameter, 11-14J, DES, gilt mvt with locking dust-cap, s#2991, the outer with
watch paper for E Cook, watchmaker, and label on back of paper for C A Burk
& Co, dealers, both of Rochester, NY; net weight of both cases without gold
bezel, crystal & mvt is 42.6 dwt (66.2 g); crystal is glued in solid to
bezel, so total net 18K weight will be certainly over 45 dwt (70 g); this watch
belonged to Thomas Kempshall (1796-1865), Whig Representative from New York
elected to the Twenty-sixth Congress of the United States (1839-1841), and prior
to that mayor of Rochester, NY; the watch was presented to him around this time
according to Kempshall family tradition; Kempshall owned a mill in Rochester
(picture provided), and ran unsuccessfully for mayor again in 1852; he was
buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, and a mountain near Long Lake in the Adirondacks
