APW - Historically interesting English verge fusee made for US market, the barrel plate marked "Joseph Lye, Lynn [Massachusetts] 1816," the identical date to the hallmark; 58mm, coin silver OF original pair case, KWKS, WED, gilt full plate mvt with pierced foliate scrolled balance cock, cock cut-out on dust-cap, s#8139, London hallmarks for 1816, with series of watch papers from the local area documenting the repair history of the watch from 1832 to 1851; in 1832, Balch & Smith of Salem Mass diagnosed the verge as "worn out;" Aaron Holmes of Lynn put in a "new virge [sic]" as well as a new mainspring in 1835; he serviced the watch again in 1838; from there the watch was serviced by Charles Lefavour of Lynn in 1840, 1846, and 1851; the 1846 paper mentions the customer John Lye, which confirms that the name and date on the plate was more than likely ordered for presentation, passed down by 1846, and was not a jeweler's name
