EPW - Thomas Earnshaw (1749-1829), "Inventit et Fecit" (literally, "the inventor and maker thereof") 119 High Holborn, London, fusee pocket chronometer with Earnshaw spring detent escapement, 55mm, coin silver OF original or purpose ordered naval duty consular case bearing London hallmarks for either 1809 or 1829 (marks obscured and indicating the date the case order was filled, not the date of manufacture of the mvt), KWKS, WED with identical signature & number, gilt full-plate mvt with DES, flat HS with long-rising overcoil, s#4719; this is an example from the original manufacturer of Earnshaw's improved pocket & ship's chronometer escapement with expansion balance that became the standard for all fusee chronometers for the remainder of the century (including the Hamilton in the 20th); while Harrison is credited with his invention of the marine chronometer, his invention was impractical, being a verge escapement with cycloidal -faced pallets and requiring a remontoir for supplying constant spring pressure, a difficult if not impossible thing to mass produce; Arnold & Earnshaw came up with slightly different practical designs at about the same time, and there was controversy about who came up with whose design first; what is not controversial is that the Arnold escapement did not work as well, and many Arnold watches were subsequently converted to Earnshaw escapements; by the time of J R Arnold, the son, all such Arnold products were manufactured with Earnshaw escapements
