Mvt: GRO, good balance motion, good poise, plates show a few MFS & minor plating wash-out, good slots & settings, no oxide on bright work; dial is original but was clearly washed in muriatic acid to remove tarnish bloom, resulting in loss of the copper toned plating to the surface, and leaving tarnish toward the corners - out of case bezel rub & scrape is noticeable, in case the color loss appears more subtle - one can pick up UFS on the surface as part of the cleaning process, slightly out of alignment with the original satin line; hands are good; original case shows light wear, MFS, some FS, one back ding, some original satin finish to back; good crown; crystal has one light scratch

Mvt: GRO, good balance motion, good poise, plates show hardly any MFS but have some surface dirt or discoloration, good slots & settings, some oxide on bright work; dial is original & period, but the possibly correct signature was painted after the dial was printed, possibly to order for Bucherer, but certainly not a distinguishing execution however quaint, dial shows some patches & tiny black speckle; hands are mismatched; original case has what appear to be correctly stamped numbers, but the Rolex marks are rather amateurishly engraved and look fresher than the rest, so presumably were either added after the fact in the same way the dial signature was, or were added later on to reinforce the impression that the case was actually original and make the watch "triple signed," in any event, everything seems to go together and in the very early period there was a lot of improvisation going on; caveat emptor; case shows medium wear to undermetal on highlights, MFS, crown shows wear; glass crystal good but a touch small

Mvt: GRO, good balance motion, good poise, plates show fine surface with a few MFS, good slots & settings, tiny oxide on bright work (regulator whiplash only); dial perfect; hands good original; original case shows hardly any wear, some MFS, no dents or dings; bow & crown show very little wear; good glass crystal; a near mint example of a top RR grade Howard

EPW - Cartier, Paris, very thin "Couteau" style (knife edge) demi-hunting case dress watch, 48mm, 18K original HC w/ enameled demi hunting front cover and snap-off enameled monogramed back, SW-SS, original silver guilloche dial, lever escapement, probably 18J, gilt, s#2438 on case & under dial, additional number 2809 (possibly Cartier reference or contract #), French 18K export touch-mark, hand-engraved Cartier signature on mvt, in associated Cartier box of later period

Mvt: GRO, good balance motion, good poise, plates show good gilding w/ hardly any MFS, some tiny corrosion specks only, a little oil smear, good slots & settings, hardly any oxide on bright work but a few tiny specks on winding wheels; dial shows light tarnish, a deeper tarnish stain towards center, some wash-out of inked dial especially at signature, some fine scuffs & glue residue; hands are original showing a little rust; original case shows light wear, MFS overall, no dents or dings; bezel in rose gold; bow & crown show little wear; the nice vintage Cartier box held another object at one time, but makes a nice home for the watch

EPW - Courvoisier et Compagnie ruby cylinder, quarter repeating on two gongs, 54mm, 18K OF original case, KWKS, WED with exquisitely well hand-painted signature & numerals, ruby cylinder escapement with polished steel escape wheel, 7J including oversized ruby cap jewel, gilt Lepine caliber, s#42478, unusual finger winding and setting system which works well through the gilt cuvette apertures, ca 1810

Mvt: GRO, good balance motion, good poise, good cylinder function to finely made ruby cylinder, plates show 3 or 4 scratches only, good gilding, good slots to nicely blued screws, very little oxide on bright work; dial has edge chips repaired with wax at 2 and more severely at 9; hands good; original heavy gauge case shows light wear, MFS overall, no dents or dings; bow & push show little wear; good glass crystal; NOTE: repeat functions well but for the following: the touch for setting tends to push the center arbor out a bit, causing the detent that advances the hour star wheel to bypass it; this would be corrected easily with a washer; as it is the hour will not advance as one sets the watch or as it runs, so it always strikes the same hour unless the arbor falls back; examination under the dial shows that the watch can be made to strike the full twelve hours merely by setting the star wheel to the proper position; if the arbor pushed back towards the plate, the watch works fine and advances properly; one gong has been repaired and now has slightly less tone than the other but still sounds pretty good; the dial has screwed feet, and the screws are missing (making examination very easy - just lift off the hands and lift off the dial)

EPW - Daniel De St. Leu, Watchmaker to her Majesty, London, gilt metal and tortoishell fusee pair case quarter-striking clock-watch, striking the quarters alone on the quarter, and the hour alone on the hour, ca. 1780, 63mm, original pair cases in gilt brass, the inner pierced w/ foliate engraving, the outer pierced as well, w/ foliate engraving, scalloped band & tortoise shell pique over a painted & foiled ground, KWKS, two-train, WED w/ Turkish market numerals (true Arabic), gold poker & beetle hands, verge escapement, s#5348

Mvt: GRO, good verge function although slightly out of beat, reasonably good gilding, MFS overall, quarter strikes bell quite nicely, hour hammer needs adjustment as it does not quite reach the bell although it is operating properly, the bell was cracked and soldered back together, creating reasonable tone, the hand painted dial is perfect, the poker hand is a well made replacement, rather short, the inner case has a few back dents, the outer is original to the inner, and shows minimal wear, good tortoise shell w/ only one small chip & crack, most of the pique points are there, only 4 missing, MFS to the shell surface, gilding thin on the cases overall; exceptional originality and condition, a longer poker hand, inner back blocking and the hour hammer adjustment being about all that is needed

EPW - Fine Continental decorative gold 1/4 hour musical repeater with tine-sur-plateau (disc type) musical mechanism, 58mm, 18K OF original ET case, KWKS, gold guilloche foil dial, steel cylinder escapement, gilt, s#151 on case only, repeating on the hour or at will, with silent/play lever internally and activation button on bottom of band, slide-lock for repeat at top of band

Mvt: GRO, good cylinder function, good repeat function & tone, good musical activation and fine tone on resonant surface, although the watch currently plays at 5 minutes before the hour and the repeat goes over 5 minutes early, so the setting square carrying the minute hand must be advanced relative to the train; good gilding, few MFS, very little oxide on bright work; especially beautiful foil dial w/ limited undulation or soft denting; fine hands; light to medium gauge original case showing very little wear, good ET, good hinges & closure, the tinest micro-dings along bezel & 2 or 3 small dings in back, good gilt cuvette; for its age & type, the watch is closing in on mint for its original state and mechanical function

EPW - Freres Esquivillon et De Choudens gold verge fusee with paste-set bezel and multi-color gold case, with full back enamel in basse-taille of mother and daughter in a garden setting, 47mm, 18K OF original case, KWKS, WED, verge escapement, gilt, s#54888, ca 1790; basse-taille enamel refers to the use of translucent enamel over engine turned ground for shimmering and dimensional effect; in this case additional gold foil floral garland decorations are added beneath the clear topcoat for brilliant effect

Mvt: GRO, good verge function, good gilding w/ minor oil cloudiness, few MFS; original dial has soft enamel repair around winding hole chip; original case shows slight color change in back and refinishing internally, indicating professional restoration probably confined to executing a clear hard enamel topcoat to restore surface scratches only; the appearance of the enamel is now mint, and only the color change to the back shows the application of heat; there is a small dent toward the edge of the back beneath the hinge, and some of the pastes have been replaced w/ modern rhinestones; a very beautiful and well-executed enamel, properly conserved

Mvt: GRO, good balance motion, good poise, plates show some limited MFS, tarnish and a few corrosion spots or specks, oil smear, small fingerprint corrosion, good slots & settings, tiny oxide on bright work; dial is perfect although the seconds dial was slightly misaligned when re-cemented in position; hands are slightly mismatched, only the hour is original; original case shows medium even wear, MFS, minor ding in front cover & surface dent on band; bow & push show little wear, one of two lift-springs does not function, but watch still opens well; good glass crystal

Mvt: Runs sluggishly, slight poising error, plates w/ numerous MFS, minor oxide & evidence of sanded removal of same, repaired gongs w/ slightly dull tone, hard winding (crown probably tight to pendant), replacement dial, replaced hands which need to be re-positioned relative to strike sequence, strike inconsistent (racks do not always pass); replacement dial is perfect, mounted in new ring; hands slightly mismatched but effective; well-fitting recase is stunning heavily carved box hinge of medium gauge, showing light wear, MFS, minor dents & dings visible internally mostly to the front cover but some in back as well; perfectly matched slide; slightly undersized crown; a very good looking combination of elements that might perform quite well with some tuning of different features

EPW - Continental musical quarter repeater, pendant activated striking on two gongs, with music playing on the hour or at will by shifting a lever in the band next to the pendant, 58mm, 18K OF original case, gilt cuvette engraved with musical score, KWKS, WED, cylinder escapement, 23 tine sur plateau (disc-type) gilt mvt, s#3605

Mvt: Almost functional while complete: Time train runs well, showing good cylinder performance; mainsprings are good; plays music well with fine tone on command; the quarter strike can be coaxed into running, again showing fine tone; excess oil currently on the repeat work; well gilt plates & barrel showing numerous FS and scratches; a fair amount of oxide on satin-work; a later screw and washer added to the musical barrel, indicating some added engineering; dial has hls visible around edge, but has been bleached at one point and re-glazed as part of a restoration process, looking good but slightly dull; lovely blued hands of later date but looking great; case shows light wear & MFS with just a few minor dings as well as a tiny crack in the back by the pendant; the cuvette is handsomely engraved w/ just a bit of gilding to touch up; good glass crystal; the fine sound makes this watch well worth getting the repeat to function smoothly, will make a very nice example

Mvt: GRO, good balance motion, good poise, chrono fuctions well, while it did require a touch of oil to get the transfer arm to shift into engagement, repeat works fine but the tone is affected by one gong block screw being stripped out - right now the chime clunks, but pressure applied to the block produces a clear and fine tone on testing - so one will only have to re-tap a new screw through the gong block into the plate; plates show a few MFS, some gilding wash-out, slots & settings w/ only minor marring, small bits of oxide on bright-work; dial is very cracked; hands are clean & original except for slightly mismatched constant seconds; original case shows light wear but has sustained numerous dents & dings, pry marks around cover, and will require quite a bit of clever work near the pendant on the band where it is partially crushed, MFS overall; glass crystals are good front & back; one would think the case was "oilcan" thin with the damage, but there is more gauge to the case than that, which is an advantage in bringing the case up to a better looking condition; a worthy project

Mvt: GRO, good balance motion, good poise, smooth tourbillion action, exposed bridges finely gilt & silvered, showing light tarnish at edges only, back plate shows some inexplicable severe scratches at center and at edge by crown wheel, while the plates would have been otherwise near mint but for tarnish discoloration; there is some faint tarnish and tarnish spotting beneath the carriage; dial shows tarnish & some fine scuffs at center by hands; hands are clean & original; original case shows little wear, some edge dents, knife marks at lift in back, light tarnish, MFS; the crown has been replaced w/ plated crown that does not screw down far enough on the stem - one can shorten the stem, or preferably find a good crown before stem length is adjusted; glass crystal good

Mvt: GRO, good balance motion, good poise, chrono functions well, has hub for hand, simply needs sweep hand replacement, repeat functions well except for tiny adjustment issues - the quarter star wheel does not jump until a couple of minutes after the quarter is passed, so the watch will strike 10:31 at 10:46, but will strike 10:48 at 10:48, for example; and the hour will not kick over until several minutes past the hour - so the hour lift and quarter lift issues will have to be adjusted; repeat tone is excellent and strong; plates show hardly any MFS but the electrum gilding is patchy w/ only occasional tiny specks, good slots overall, hardly any oxide on bright-work; dial has large raised chip glued back at 12; hands are clean but slightly mismatched within the correct style, both seconds hands needed while bot seconds posts are good; original light gauge case shows light wear, MFS, typical soft dents & dings all over; glass crystal good in front, missing over mvt; great sound & large size make this a good restoration project

Mvt: Will tick & stop  after a bit in some positions, shows good verge function dial down and is probably only a lubrication issue, fine gilding w/ minimal FS, wonderful balance cock, mvt original throughout w/ broad pillars; the damaged & roughly restored enamel dial had no other feet, but what it has are broken, and there is the possibility that it is a purpose made replacement, although the late 18th century period of the dial may be correct there appear to be other holes in the dial plate which may have accomodated a prior dial; the minute hand is missing but the hour hand is beautiful, although possibly from another source (more typical of a hand seen on a Prior in gold & enamel multiple cases); the cases are quite original, w/ split bezel, good pendant & bow, nicely toned tarnish & minimal defects

EPW - Breguet & Fils (signed) for Spanish or South American market, 56mm, OF 18K original case, KWKS, solid gold foil dial w/ multi-color gold overlays, ruby cylinder escapement, 7J total, gilt splayed bridge mvt, s#15649, perhaps a Breguet export contract, not a Breguet product, ca 1830-40, together w/ stone set GF key

Mvt: Ticking, but escapement is out of beat and slightly dry, plates show MFS, some oxide on bright work; dial clean w/ some minor unevenness; hands slightly mismatched; original case shows light wear, MFS, some minor dings; gilt cuvette has impression from later stamping to create balance cock clearance; bow a bit loose; good glass crystal; key has loose steel winding component; watches such as these are probably sub-contracted exports rather than "fakes"

EPW - Charles LeRoy, Paris, very small gold verge fusee watch, ca 1790, together with a miniature verge fusee mechanism signed "Lepine LeRoy," the cased watch measures 31mm in diameter, the mvt 23mm, OF 18K original case, KWKS, WED, s#8233, in well-fitting wooden box of the late 19th century

Charles LeRoy: Ticking verge w/ uneven motion, gummy fusee clicks internally, but winds and runs, good gilding, unaltered; dial w/ faint hls, extensive chips around winding hole; fine original gold hands; original case shows light wear overall, medium wear at pendant/bow junction cutting into the former a bit, some tiny dings & MFS, button cap missing half its top; good domed crystal; spare mvt is complete but gummy, good verge staff too gummy to tick, chain complete and on barrel, good dial; box has good finish, front latch button gone leaving only a tiny bit of metal to catch ahold of to open the box

EPW - Continental verge fusee alarm watch, 53mm, OF original silver consular case w/ pierced & foliate engraved cuvette, KWKS, cream-color ED, gilt mvt w/ elaborate half-mask over full plate, 2-train, s#4880

Mvt: NR, verge staff OK but will not tick w/ pressure, barrel hook detached, alarm strikes on winding regardless of hand position, plates show good gilding & very few MFS, tiny oxide on bright work; dial is extensively chipped, cracked, and glued; minute hand changed; original case shows very little wear, medium tarnish, MFS, numerous small back dings; bow replaced but good; good glass crystal; the nice case and plate condition show very little use, but the mvt & dial need careful restoration

Mvt: NR, very gummy, shows good motion & poise w/ pressure applied to train, needs OH to run at all, plates show some MFS, good slots & settings, hardly any oxide on bright work; dial has single hl at 12; hands good but sweep is short; original medium gauge case shows medium wear, MFS, minor dings & crease; bow very worn, brass crown shows wear; good plastic crystal

EPW - English verge fusee by Jos Wilmshurst, Brighton, 52mm, London hallmarked coin silver original HC, KWKS, WED, verge escapement, gilt, s#734

Mvt: GRO but does stop with case closed, so needs minor adjustment for cock pressure, otherwise good verge function in all positions; perfect dial; missing minute hand; very heavy gauge original consular HC showing medium to substantial wear but still looking good because of weight, a couple of back scratches, on long, one short & severe, light dings, tarnish, MFS; good low domed glass crystal

EPW - French, Royal Exchange London fusee, 45mm, 18K OF original case, KWKS, multi-color gold dial, detached lever escapement, probably 11J (7J with capped escape wheel only in otherwise unjeweled train), gilt, solid gold balance, locking dust-cap, s#4743

Mvt: Barely ticking, escapement seems to hang slightly or hesitate, needs OH at least, plates show some MFS and one spot of concentrated scratches, good gilding but plenty of dirt & gum, one replaced cock cap setting screw, hardly any oxide on bright work; evenly tarnished dial w/ very few MFS; matched hands of proper size but slightly later period; heavy gauge original case shows medium wear, MFS, hardly any ET left, a few dings; original bow shows wear; good bull's-eye crystal

EPW - Jacques Lhuillier, Paris (1769-1789) quarter repeating on bell with dumb strike button, verge fusee, 38mm, 18K gold, enamel and rose-cut diamond OF original case, KWKS, WED, no number visible, ca 1780

Mvt: GRO, good verge function, solder repair to balance cock piercing, good repeat function, fine bell tone, dumb repeat enabled by holding in a button on the front bezel at 7:30 and depressing plunger while holding the button, demanding a bit of coordination; dial has chips around winding hole; beautifully pierced original hands; case shows light wear overall, the guilloche plaque on the back was once enameled in all likelihood, the guilloche now showing some light marks where the enamel was probably knocked off, the champleve elements around both bezels have little loss if any, but the basse-taille elements in green around the back show numerous chips and tiny losses, reinforcing the notion of the back sustaining some damage at one point necessitating the removal of the plaque; as well, a bezel has been made for the domed glass crystal and inserted in the original bezel without alteration, something one occasionally sees done when the appropriate size crystal is not available; in spite if all of this, the appearance is very nice, the diamond decoration including a larger stone in the pendant, and the function of the watch is good, by a listed maker in Britten's

EPW - Vauchez, Paris verge fusee with ruby, split pearl & enamel decoration, 37mm, 18K OF original consular case w/ spring loaded bezel activated by button on pendant, KWKS, WED, no visible number, ca 1790

Mvt: GRO, good verge function, good gilding: perfect dial; fine original filigree hands; the rubies & split pearls are complete; the central back basse-taille panel sustained damage at one time, was removed and re-enameled in hard without grinding the surface flat, and then was damaged again and the chips re-fired; alternatively, the damage was fired all at once with glaze to the remaining surface, creating the uneven effect; as the rest of the watch is in lovely condition and shows little wear overall, it would be best to remove the panel, remove all enamel, and fire the planchet complete in hard to achieve a perfectly restored effect; currently, the planchet floats in the bezel but may have had some pitch flowed in; while there seems to be evidence of lead solder at the edge of the planchet, there does not seem to be any involvement in the joint, so the planchet should pop out

EPW - Longines contract for Tiffany & Co, 42mm, platinum marked AW OF original case, SW-SS, original silvered dial, lever escapement, 21J, "Extra Superior" grade, s#4856933

Mvt: GRO, good balance motion, good poise, plates show a few MFS but the dominant problem is 25% loss of rhodium plating, good slots & settings, hardly any oxide on bright work; dial has faint tarnish toning, barely visible, tiny galvanic discoloration coming out under numerals; hands good; original heavy gauge case shows hardly any wear, numerous MFS & FS, no dents or dings; bow & crown show hardly any wear; good glass crystal; the mvt is in much better mechanical shape than apparent, the plates were simply overwashed, and could be re-plated

Mvt: GRO, slightly sluggish motion, good poise, out of beat, could use lube or OH, good gilding; perfect dial; good original hands; case shows little wear but very dark tarnish overall; due to the electrum content the case will clean very well with silver cleaner first, then final cleaning and hand polishing; the portrait panel is nearly perfect w/ surface scratches and a very tiny fleck; the back panel has some tiny edge chipping; the filigree enamel has some minor chipping; the case itself shows little evidence of dents or dings; the back does not quite close; the bow & push show some wear; will be a very good looking watch once the tarnish is removed and the watch is hand polished

Mvt: GRO but hands will not set, clutch probably gummed, good balance motion, good poise, plates show few MFS but show plating wash-out & patches, good slots, tiny oxide on bright-work; dial is perfect; hands are clean & original; recase shows light wear, some MFS, numerous dings, slight front hinge distension; crystal missing

EPW - Patek Philippe & Co for Julius C Walk & Son, Indianapolis, mvt with Time Trials number next to balance,  52mm, GF OF recase, SW-SS, WED, marked "Adjusted Extra" and signed by Patek on the mvt, the contract signature on dial & mvt, single GJS on center wheel, DES, fully capped lever escapement, 20J, standard bimetallic balance with platinum timing screws and gold timing weights, micrometer regulator, wolf's tooth winding, from the late 1890's, s#100022; the Geneva Observatory had as one of its published conditions in any "Bulletin de Marche" (Time Trial Certificate) that the serial number of a watch to be tested should be next to the balance on the dial plate; as a result, Patek watches and others would typically repeat the serial number twice, as is the case with the present watch; it was only a few years after the production of this watch that Guillaume developed his alloy and balance with middle temperature error compensation in 1901, at which point more watches were submitted for trial; the current mvt is interesting for being a contract as well as having been submitted prior to invention of the Guillaume balance, the latter being the more typical balance one sees on watches submitted to the Observatory; there exists the possibility that the Geneva Observatory still has the record of this watch, well worth researching

Mvt: GRO, good balance motion, good poise, balance appears to be in original condition w/ fine blued HS, a very important consideration when purchasing a Time Trials mvt, plates show some loss of rhodium plating, a few MFS, four small faint corrosion spots, slots & settings w/ minimal marring, tiniest oxide on bright work, two tiny dings on 4th wheel bridge edges; dial perfect w/ only 3 or 4 short MFS; hands good; sturdy GF recase shows light even wear, tiniest highlight brassing beginning on band, some MFS, no dents or dings; gold bow & improvised replacement crown show some wear; good glass crystal; a safe a sturdy home for this fine mvt until an optimum recase is devised; at least the mvt, dial and balance are in good state of originality
