GRO, fine cylinder function, fine repeat function & tone, proper markings on
case & cuvette, fractional serial number, fine Tavernier style dial,
original case showing medium even wear, case maker AP&F, a fine example from
the maker of this name working from 1812 to 1825 at Rue St. Mederic. [For
clarity, there were two famous Pierre Le Roy's (two words), one was the brother
of Julien, the other the son. The son never used his own name to sign a watch or
clock, but continued use of his father's name, Julien. The brother Pierre's work
was typical of the mid-18th century. The son Pierre died in 1785. The present
watch is from a later generation, but it is unknown if this Pierre Leroy (one
word) was in any way descended from the Le Roy family. At the time, the two
spellings constituted families from two different lines, so it is doubtful, but
orthography within families does change over time. One thing is clear, this
Pierre was not involved in the development of Leroy & Cie., which arose from
the fusion of some branch of the Le Roy family and the Leroy family].
