GRO, excellent motion & poise, fine plates save for one engraved correction patch tastefully executed above the larger winding wheel, hardly any marring of setting or slots, very little oxide evidence, white alloy hairspring probably of the Paillard anti-magnetic type (see note below), heavy gauge original case showing medium even wear, dial chip repair at 4 and hls [NOTE: The present watch was produced in 1886, well after Paillard's development of the anti-magnetic palladium alloy spring in 1877. The Invar alloy spring (which was as well temperature-resistant) was not developed until 1897-99 by Guillaume. If the spring, on testing, shows antimagnetic properties, then it is most likely of the Paillard type, unless Waltham can be demonstrated to have introduced their own version of an anti-magnetic alloy. As such, it is a very rare application to be found in a Model 1872.]

GRO, good poise, slightly sluggish motion due to dry oil, nearly mint mvt, perfect settings, hardly any scratches, good slots, excellent damascene, no oxide save for faintest tiny spot on click wheel, original & correct two-tone case showing very little wear, only the faintest thin brass lines towards the bottom of the band, very few microfine scratches, one short fine scratch on the case back, perfect dial, mint hands; a truly superb example

GRO, good verge function, mvt needs cleaning, tight cannon pinion, 2 small edge chips to dial, interior has stopper for some purpose, but as the chamber is the same as for the mvt, then presumably perfumed cotton may have been placed there and held from mvt contact; so we may call this a vinaigrette watch as well as a form watch; there are small bits of enamel loss on the fingerboard and at the back center, as well as on the tailpiece and beneath it; condition overall is quite wonderful and original

EPW- Terond, Alliez & Bachelard Swiss 1/4 hr repeater sur-plateau musical watch made for the English market KWKS gilt lever mvt with special guard pin lever escapement, the safety projecting from the fork to carry within and outside the channel cut roller on alternate beats, in original ET 18K YG OF case with RN porcelain dial and blued spade hands, s#26083 c1820 55mm. The music plays on the hour or at will where the functions controlled by a switch under the bezel and a slide in the band.

GRO, good motion, balance out of flat, good musical function with tone projecting well only on a resonant surface, good repeat function, some mvt scratches, missing stop-works on music barrel; the most unique aspect of the watch is the English lever escapement embellishment, with capped escapement and unique safety system, where the safety pin rides off the fork on a projection, which circulates on the outside of the roller on one beat and then on the inside of the roller in a specially cut channel on the other; the balance cock is English, and there seem to be no other holes in the plates indicating any kind of custom retrofitting; it would seem that the escapement is some years later than the rest of the watch, so perhaps concealment of alteration was expertly performed, or this was a very precocious experiment; the thin gauge case shows light wear overall and the occasional ding, the dial is purpose made and definitively English; it is most likely that the entire fitting was done in the middle of the 19th century

Parts- Pendulum - Very rare George P. Reed patent chronometer pendulum based on his patent granted September 23, 1890, US Patent #436,941, applied for November 6, 1899; the pendulum rod consists of a balance form weighted bimetallic split strip attached to a central ring, allowing for the raising or lowering of the center of gravity of the pendulum "bob" to correspond exactly with any temperature induced change of length in the rod owing to temperature changes in the ambient environment; this form and design is unique among compensating pendulums and presumably was designed because Reed felt that it would provide a substantially more accurate effect than standard designs, which are typically poorly constructed; the design, massive form and precision weighting reflect Reed's understanding of compensated balances in watches; length about 20 inches, circular bob over 6 inches in diameter

In original condition, complete, differing somewhat from the patent drawing, showing light tarnish overall, the original signature plate, a slight asymmetry to be noted in the external bimetallic split ring, light oxide on the steel parts; this pendulum is probably one of a handful ever made, and perhaps the only one currently known to be on the market

[For clarity, there were two famous Pierre Le Roy's (two words), one was the brother of Julien, the other the son. The son never used his own name to sign a watch or clock, but continued use of his father's name, Julien. The brother Pierre's work was typical of the mid-18th century. The son Pierre died in 1785. The present watch is from a later generation, but it is unknown if this Pierre Leroy (one word) was in any way descended from the Le Roy family. At the time, the two spellings constituted families from two different lines, so it is doubtful, but orthography within families does change over time. One thing is clear, this Pierre was not involved in the development of Leroy & Cie., which arose from the fusion of some branch of the Le Roy family and the Leroy family].
