EPW- Cartier European Watch & Clock Co. Art Deco watch in 14K YG OF case with cream enamel bezel highlighting hour RN tract with inner 60 minute tract on dial surface all surrounded by outer platinum band set with diamonds, 47mm, (originally a black onyx case body)

GRO, but needs cleaning; 18K & enamel bezel in good condition; this watch has original European Watch & Clock Co. numbers on all parts except the case body, which is replaced; the original body was black onyx; the new case body was made in 14K gold apparently cast or machined to some extent from a solid block, making it quite heavy; the case construction implied by the original parts is curious, in that the numbered mvt fits in a numbered ring, with a numbered disc screwed to the ring, the disc acts as a separator for the flat crystal, which floats on the disc and is held flush by the numbered bezel screwed to the disc; the snap off dial is removed to access the left-threaded detent screw to remove the stem before removing the movement from the ring; in addition, it appears that the tension of the bow is all that holds in position the split platinum ring holding the diamonds; hands & dial are original, with the Cartier signature blurred by time as is typical of this printing on engine turning; the crystal is broken & removed; it would be well worth the effort to have a new body made of onyx, as all the original case parts are there

EPW- Breguet à Paris French gilt verge fusee mvt in blue enameled and split pearl set raised monogrammed case with paste set front and rear bezels and AN porcelain dial, 52mm

APW- George Reed important serial #13 KWKS pivoted detent chronometer with his famous first patent No. 49155 of August 1, 1865, providing the mainspring barrel with retaining power, as well as his patent of February 5, 1867, a unique design of pivoted detent chronometer in original superb ET & Co 18K HC with original RN porcelain SSD and faceted spade hands, 54mm

GRO, very fine escapement function, escapement in completely original condition, showing no evidence of alteration or adjustment; plates with good gilding, showing only a pair of fine scratches and very tiny spots of corrosion; the stop-works and other bright-work are oxide free, only a touch of dried oil on the former; the balance is true; the hairspring is not isochronal, but shows perfect original blue; the finely engraved original case shows light overall wear; the monogram escutcheon has been engraved most artistically, and does not appear to conceal any other or prior engraving, but it very well could, because of the cuvette evidence; the cuvette has been buffed in an attempt to remove an original inscription from Woonsocket, RI; when the person who was removing the inscription discovered that other details of the cuvette were being buffed off as well, they stopped, leaving the engine turned features of the cuvette worn away in spots, and the inscription still barely legible; hence the hypothesis that the escutcheon engraving was part of the same attempt to remove the personalization; the dial is perfect, although the seconds dial is rotated slightly and should be repositioned and affixed; the associated box fits the watch very well; a very important historical American watch in otherwise superb original condition

GRO, mvt nearly pristine with only the faintest microfine surface scratches, good bright-work, and fine gilding in engraved signature; the substantial case is in excellent condition, showing very little wear, with finely engraved monogram and “1882” monogram as well; the one defect is that the lift spring is broken; otherwise hinges, crowns & bow-stops are very fine; the dial has a tiny chip above the 60 seconds mark, with tiny hl proceeding to the dial center; a superb example of this maker’s high grade work

GRO, fine motion but balance slightly out of round, platting a little dull with microfine scratches or nicks from servicing, superbly formed HS, very heavy gauge original case entirely of Swiss origin as is the mvt, well engraved signature on cuvette also done to order in Switzerland, case bearing K18 mark as well as Neufchatel mark for minimum 16K quality, case shows medium to substantial slightly uneven wear, rendered less of an issue by the sheer mass of the case, good crystal & case closure, perfect Swiss dial, although the seconds hole has visible grinding owing in part to the undersized seconds hand; the rumor among collectors and dealers many years ago was that these rare reverse fusee pivoted detent chronometers were built by Louis Audemars, but this movement is marked Hoff & Fils under the dial

EPW- Joseph Starling London verge fusee KWKS gilt mvt with diamond endstone in 18K YG and blue and light blue guilloche enamel OF case with AN porcelain dial and gold hands, s#5939 c1790 51mm

GRO, excellent verge function, tiny dial chip at center & faint hl, beautiful cobalt center panel in perfect condition, with minor well-matched touch-up to outer small cobalt medallions, but the case back in its entirety was separated from the band at one point, and some one attempted to solder it back together with lead solder, leading to some dissolution of the gold edges; while everything holds in place, the separation can be seen all around the back edge; the lead would have to be removed mechanically and a tiny ring made to reinforce the edge for restoration to be perfect; A magnificent appearance nonetheless

GRO, excellent motion & poise, superb ruby duplex function, large escape wheel, oversized mvt, capped escapement, fine gilding, few plate scratches, beautifully blued maintaining power & springs, dial unfortunately restored overall, hands original, original case showing medium overall wear; this is a rare product from the son of John Arnold, chronometer maker, probably designed at first for a consular case more typical of his father’s manufacture, but it is interesting that the mvt was ultimately cased just prior to the successorship of Charles Frodsham to JR Arnold in 1842; the escapement action is superb and of rare form

Ticks sluggishly, needs lube, fine mvt by George Allan, active 1760-84, hallmarks corresponding to 1774 matching on inner & outer, it appears that the dial and pendant were changed in the first half of the 19th century with modification to the outer case pendant channel as well; these modifications were done expertly in the best of guild craftsmanship, showing the esteem held for the original; the hands as well date from the period of modification; the case shows medium wear with no break, and the exquisite addition of a split baroque pearl set on the push piece

EPW- Le Cerf à Brest French verge fusee KWKS gilt mvt in 18K YG OF with late 17th century to early 18th century Genevese enameled scene depicting aristocratic mother nursing child, applied later on rear cover, RN porcelain dial including fancy gold key, c1775 38mm

GRO, the watch itself is a nice late 18th century example, chips to dial at winding, hole in case back repaired due to soldering failure most likely; the important aspect of the watch is the enamel, done much in the manner of early Genevese enameled watches by Huaud Freres; the panel has been glued within the bezel and has a hairline through the woman’s brow; the curvature of the enamel suggests that it formed the case body of an earlier watch; to what extent the body has been reduce, at all, from its original state remains to be determined upon removal of the enamel from the bezel; but the panel appears predominantly complete

EPW- Golay Leresche & Fils Geneve lady’s SW pin set NI mvt in 18K YG and polychrome enamel OF paste-set case with AN porcelain SSD and attached crescent moon shaped diamond set pendant, s#19689 29mm

GRO, very fine lever mvt, finely marked case, perfect fancy dial, fine basse-taille enamel set with relatively large rose cut diamonds, with fairly substantial amount of edge chipping and surface scratches; the pin, while of separate manufacture, seems to be purpose made and contemporary to the watch, the match is too perfect for the them, the rose cuts are exceptionally large; a beautiful paring in any event, despite the edge defects to the enamel panel

GRO but sluggish, fully capped escapement, gilt damascene Jurgensen style plates somewhat darkened, winding wheel bridge bent slightly, along with dent on second wheel bridge, causing some roughness to winding, perfect dial, beautiful case form showing light wear, latch spring askew making closure less than tight, the original rose-cut diamonds were removed, replaced with diamonds of approximate size and lower quality, the enamel has been restored on both sides, and finished with a clear coat which has yellowed or was the closest color to a clear coat that could have been selected; the watch deserves better restoration

1200

454

EPW- James Howdens Edinburgh verge fusee KWKS gilt mvt with flat three-arm balance in sharply ET 18K YG HC with 11” YGF chain and RN porcelain dial, 48mm

GRO, good verge function, but balance cock has been bent, cracked and bent back into position, probably by a desperate watchmaker; the verge performs well; the cuvette has bee cutout to allow the balance cock to show through originally, and is unrelated to the damage to the cock; case is very heavy, with elegant swirl pattern pendant & bow; one hl

GRO, good verge function, later white enamel dial, latch hanging up on dial plate, engraved dust-cap, champleve & basse-taille enamel mostly complete, but the raised surfaces and inconsistent filling suggest that this was a hard enamel restoration, well executed and reasonably authentic; there are surface scratches in the back center, and the bezel closure sometimes opens

Good cylinder but watch is gummed and fully wound, needs OH, perfect dial, near mint case with perfect original cobalt basse-taille enamel, fine rose-cut diamond decoration is complete; the only defect is the lift spring for the back is broken; the lovely period matching chain is probably original, and has some fine chips

EPW- CH Meylan split second chronograph SW LS adj NI mvt in 14K YG OF case with 14K cuvette and AN porcelain DSD with outer red 5-minute markers and .2 second divisions, 46mm

GRO time train, but there are some technical issues: chrono only partially works, due to broken retaining spring at one o’clock button position activating lever, in addition to the button being inactive even when the lever is operated manually; in addition, the winding has some roughness, and reverse winding causes the motion work to move slightly even with the lever all the way in; some issues are overhaul related, due to gumminess, the activator spring must be replaced, and the return feature for the button must be looked at; hls at 12, light even wear to medium heavy gauge case
