Thomas Moore Ipswich c1750 astronomical astrological calendar tall clock with anchor escapement and stones in star map. These stones are of three sizes reflecting the particular brightness of the stars. Hour and ½ hr strike with pull repeater in trunk. The unusual oval dial has silvered chapter ring and matted center to the dial plate. Silvered nameplate marked "Thomas Moore of Ipswich" with matching steel hands. Between XI and I is the astrological calendar and dial. Christmas day is marked with an X. The cut out sections of the dial, in addition to being decorative, enable you to see which stars and constellations are about to rise and set. The clock is housed in a mahogany case with ebony inlay and cross-banding, Corinthian columns with heavy brass capitals and bases, and key escutcheon. The hood’s doorknob is fitted with ivory. Thomas Moore has nearly seven column inches, as much or more than many of the World’s famous makers in the standard book on antique clocks, "Old Clocks and Their Makers" by Britten. With a career of sixty-nine years of clock making, his clocks and watches are in museums and famous collections such as the "Wetherfield". |

Edward Lefebvre, Palais Royal, Paris, #1095, 63mm silver OF chronometer deckwatch. The 20J mvt features a lever escapement, oversize compensated balance with gold and platinum timing screws, counterpoised fork, wolf tooth winding and a GWT. The mvt is signed and numbered and the cuvette is signed and numbered with the maker’s address of 36 Grie Montpensieur, Palais Royal, Paris; the outer case is signed US Navy No. 44. c1899. This historically important chronometer deckwatch is one of the first groups of six torpedo boat watches purchased by the US Navy on March 31, 1899. Lefebvre had been supplying watches to the French Navy and these watches had passed the French Hydrographic Office chronometer standards before being offered to the US Navy where they were subsequently tested at the Naval Observatory in Washington DC and on board two US torpedo boats: the USS McKinsie and the USS Winslow. These watches had to be regulated to a high degree of accuracy and thoroughly tested before being put into service. No. 1095 was subsequently assigned to the USS Cushing, the oldest torpedo boat in the fleet, which served in the Spanish-American War and off the Atlantic coast until after World War I. The watch comes with a substantial number of documents obtained from the National Archives including copies of the preliminary purchase agreement, the original invoice showing the serial number of the watch, testing results from the US Naval Observatory, a transfer document from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard indicating the assignment of the watch to the Cushing, an archival photograph of the Cushing with a synopsis of it’s history, etc. Discussions with restorers and curators of the primary Naval and nautical museums throughout the country, as well as the Smithsonian and Greenwich, indicate that this is probably the sole surviving example of these original chronometer watches purchased by the Navy. |

Waltham Model 1621 prototype to the Waltham Model 1622 pocket watch. The Model 1621 was most likely made in 1941 and many were destined for the British and the Canadians. This one has Canadian markings. Wartime Walthams are scarce since very few were made for the government. The owner is aware of just two Model 1621’s in existence – this one, and one in Florida. See page 37 of "MILITARY TIMEPIECES" courtesy of The Society of Military Horologists NAWCC Chapter 143 Special Exhibit at the National Watch and Clock Museum" as this watch is pictured there. |
